When to Visit Prince Court’s Accident & Emergency (A&E) Department

Knowing when to seek emergency medical attention can make all the difference. To ensure timely medical attention and prevent future complications, it is crucial to recognise symptoms that warrant emergency medical care.

Recognising Medical Emergencies

Chest Pain

Sudden and intense chest pain that feels like a heavyweight, pressure, or squeezing sensation, possibly radiating to your arm, neck, or back, could indicate a heart attack. Immediate medical intervention is necessary.

Difficulty Breathing

Shortness of breath, wheezing, or difficulty breathing should be treated as an emergency. This could be due to pneumonia, asthma, allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) or other serious respiratory conditions.

Uncontrolled Bleeding

If bleeding is profuse, uncontrollable, or results from a serious injury, such as a deep cut or traumatic wound, immediate medical attention is needed to prevent shock and further complications.

Sudden Weakness or Numbness

A stroke may be indicated by weakness or numbness on one side of the body, especially if it occurs suddenly or is accompanied by confusion, trouble speaking or understanding speech[bn1] , difficulty seeing in one or both eyes, dizziness, loss of balance, or a sudden severe headache. The acronym BE FAST (Balance, Eyes, Face drooping, Arm weakness, Speech difficulty, Time to call ambulance) is a helpful reminder.

Severe Pain

Intense or persistent pain, particularly if there is no apparent cause, could indicate a serious medical issue. A sudden, sharp and severe pain in the abdomen could indicate appendicitis, gallstones or a perforated ulcer. On the other hand, severe back pain with weakness, numbness and loss of bowel or bladder control could suggest a spinal cord injury.
