Optometry

Overview

With a team of qualified clinical Optometrists and skilled assistants, we work in collaboration with the ophthalmology department to ensure the highest quality of eye care for our patients.

Enhancing Vision Health for a Fulfilling Life

Vision is a fundamental aspect of our lives, enabling us to experience the world around us and engage in various activities with clarity and precision. However, vision problems and eye conditions can significantly impact our quality of life. This is where the field of Optometry comes into play. Optometry is a specialised branch of healthcare that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and management of eye-related conditions, as well as the optimisation of visual health.

Comprehensive Specialised Optometry Services at Prince Court Medical Centre

At Prince Court, our Optometry unit provides comprehensive services to both inpatients and outpatients. With a team of qualified clinical Optometrists and skilled assistants, we work in collaboration with the ophthalmology department to ensure the highest quality of eye care for our patients. Our services include diagnostic assessments and visual evaluations:

  • Diagnostic Services
Our Optometrists conduct thorough assessments, covering the entire spectrum of the eye's anatomy. Using advanced techniques and state-of-the-art equipment, we perform a range of assessments that include:
    • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) system
      • This non-invasive imaging technology allows us to visualise and evaluate the structures of the eye, providing detailed information about the retina, optic nerve, and other important ocular components
    • Non-mydriatic Funduscopy
      • Examining the back of the eye, including the retina, blood vessels, and optic disc, without the need for pupil dilation
    • Humphreys Visual Field test
      • This assessment measures the sensitivity of the visual field, helping to identify any areas of vision loss or abnormalities
    • Pachymetry
      • We measure the thickness of the cornea, which is essential for assessing conditions such as glaucoma and planning for corrective surgeries like LASIK
    • Topography
      • By mapping the curvature of the cornea, we gain insights into the corneal shape, which is crucial for contact lens fitting and diagnosing conditions like keratoconus
    • Anterior segment imaging
      • This assessment allows us to examine the front portion of the eye, including the cornea, iris, and lens, to detect any abnormalities or diseases
    • Tonometry
      • Measuring intraocular pressure to screen for conditions like glaucoma, which can cause damage to the optic nerve if left untreated
    • Ophthalmoscopy
      • Using a specialised instrument, we examine the interior structures of the eye, such as the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels
    • Biometry
      • This measurement helps determine the precise power of intraocular lenses required for cataract surgery, ensuring accurate vision correction

  • Visual Assessment Services
Our Optometrists offer comprehensive visual assessments that cater to patients of all ages, ranging from those with normal vision to those with low vision. These assessments cover various aspects, including:
    • Visual Acuity
      • We assess the sharpness and clarity of vision, determining the smallest letters or objects that can be seen accurately
    • Refractive error
      • By evaluating the eye's focusing ability, we determine the presence of conditions such as near-sightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism, prescribing appropriate corrective measures like glasses or contact lenses
    • Colour vision
      • We evaluate the ability to perceive and differentiate colours accurately, helping to detect colour vision deficiencies or disorders
    • Binocular vision
      • This assessment examines how well the eyes work together as a team, assessing eye alignment, depth perception, and coordination
    • Low vision
      • For individuals with significant visual impairments, we provide specialised evaluations and recommendations to enhance their functional vision and quality of life
    • Contact lens assessment
      • We offer consultations and fittings for patients interested in wearing contact lenses, ensuring a comfortable and appropriate fit for optimal vision correction and eye health.

  • Visual Rehabilitation
    • Our optometrists are skilled in assessing the specific visual needs of patients and prescribing appropriate visual aids such as glasses, magnifiers, or specialised low vision devices. These aids are tailored to address specific visual impairments and help individuals maximise their remaining vision for daily activities, reading, and overall independence.
    • In addition to visual aids, our optometrists also provide consultation on visual rehabilitation techniques such as vision therapy. Vision therapy involves a series of customised exercises and activities designed to improve visual skills, enhance eye coordination, and promote better visual processing. This therapy is particularly beneficial for individuals with conditions like amblyopia (lazy eye), strabismus (eye misalignment), or visual perceptual disorders. Through a personalised treatment plan, our optometrists guide patients through vision therapy sessions to strengthen their visual abilities and achieve optimal visual function.
