Common Tumour Markers and the Cancers They May Be Linked To
Different tumour markers may be associated with different types of cancer and can help doctors assess cancer risk, monitor treatment response, or detect recurrence after treatment. However, tumour markers are not diagnostic on their own and must always be interpreted alongside other clinical findings. The gold standard for cancer diagnosis is tissue histology.

What Are the Early Warning Signs of Cancer?

Unexplained weight loss
Persistent pain without an obvious cause
Ongoing fatigue
Unusual lumps or swelling

Changes in bladder or bowel habits

Does a High Tumour Marker Level Always Mean Cancer?
It is important to understand that elevated tumour marker levels or abnormal tumour marker results do not necessarily mean a person has cancer. Some non-cancerous medical conditions such as inflammation, infections, benign growths, liver disease and hormonal conditions can affect tumour marker results. Tumour marker levels may also change during cancer treatment and are often used to help monitor treatment response over time.

Can Cancer Be Present Even if Blood Test Results Are Normal?
Not all cancers produce elevated tumour marker levels, particularly in their early stages. A normal tumour marker result does not completely rule out the presence of cancer, just as an elevated result does not automatically confirm it.
Cancer markers are only one part of a broader clinical assessment which should be interpreted alongside a person's symptoms, medical history, physical examination, imaging studies, and other diagnostic tests.
